The exhibited works for KONTROL are all part of a larger on-going research project, in which Kristian Kragelund, through his work with process based paintings and sculptures, seeks to examine and trace the relevance of a Western structural dominance reflected in contemporary art and culture.
The paintings are seen as a response to a current fragmentation of values, where rigid hegemonic and imperial cognitions are disintegrating, and where the individual is left to define her own authenticity and reality through the midst of endless information feeds and sensual stimulants; a state where institutional critique and recognition paradoxically are manifested as means of resistance and a necessity of (self) control and definition.
Based on this thesis, the works for KONTROL is made by treating a historically charged support - the canvas on a wooden stretcher – with a variety of homemade metal-infused paints, acid solutions and industrial components such as zinc phosphate or heat resistant enamels. The compositional structure of the surface is arranged in ways that resembles or mimic that of an abstract modernist visual language, based on a sterilized outlook on forms inspired by architecture and infrastructure - in an attempt to render a visual correlation of form and content, expression and function, action and purpose.
