Jeffrey Silverthorne: Claudia and Charlie, Rhode Island, 1971
Jeffrey Silverthorne’s exhibition Portraits & Figures revolves around the portrait – in body and nude studies – of people and their appearance as sculptural form. The works are created between 1970 and 2012 and have been specifically selected for this project among Silverthorne’s numerous series. The exhibition gives a unique insight into Jeffrey Silverthorne’s conception of man in general and himself in particular. Rather than mere portraits, the photographs are reflections on youth and the process of aging, and thereby of the impermanence of the world.
“The body is a complex and beautiful vehicle” Silverthorne writes about the selection of works, “ subject to the pleasures of youth and the indignities of ageing. With this vehicle of body we maneuver through time, place and our imagination. With this body we make relationships, children, and cruise in to death.” Portraits & Figures is a flow of light, reflections, memories and transformation.
A couple of years ago Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris presented a comprehensive exhibition on American photography in the 1970s in which Jeffrey Silverthorne’s position indicated his role as a pioneer and a significant source of inspiration for numerous other artists. Jeffrey Silverthorne is represented at The Museum of Modern Art in New York, International Museum of Photography at George Eastman House in Rochester and Boston Museum of Fine Arts in Boston among other places.
Jeffrey Silverthorne was born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1946. He began taking photographs around 1967 at the age of 21. In 1972 Silverthorne begun a formal education as a photographer at Wheelock College, Boston. This also marked the beginning of an academic career. Alongside photography he thus began lecturing at the Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island. The art of Jeffrey Silverthorne has been described as "The World of Final Things", which was also the title of a German essay on him. The pictures constantly refer intersections between love (and eroticism) and death.
The book “Portraits & Figures” is published in connection with the exhibition (64 pages, illustrated in black/white and color, text in English and French.)
Simultaneously a reception will be held for Lars Schwander’s book, “Quelques Souvenirs - OUI PARIS” (96 pages, foreword by Dorotee Smith, richly illustrated in black/white and color). In Drawings, watercolors and paintings, created over 24 years (1988-2012), the book depicts Paris through 24 hours – from morning to morning – travelling from the exterior to the interior, from the general to the intimate. |
