Mie Mørkeberg: untitled (Esbjerg Banegård). 2012, oil on board,124 x 150 cm
The new paintings by the Danish artist Mie Mørkeberg spell out the experience of being together alone.
The works presents a series of human derserted public spaces, that loaded with states of mind appear violent and extremely vivid. The solo exhibition "Private - Public" takes place in gallery Tom Christoffersen and includes a mural by Mie Mørkeberg, which she will conduct shortly before the opening.
The paintings are expressive, and although they are more impasto than previously exhibited Mørkeberg painting, they still contain many painting and drawing techniques. In several works these technical skills create tensions between detailed figurative elements and fields smeared beyond recognition.
The point of departure are existing public spaces – train stations, town halls, schools – which are in current use, can be visited and serves an everyday function. At the same time these places are historic buildings with stately halls and stairways, which exceeds the human scale and insist on the past. In Mørkeberg’s hands the depicted interiors appear official, representative, monumental - and simultaneously - totally destroyed as if they were seen through a filter of anger, a sense of powerlessness, a state of melancholy, or what ever may result in a brake down. As previously encountered in the production of Mie Mørkeberg what is recognized as the personally or privately experienced works as a resistance to the conventional unsaid. This latent tension is in "Private-Public" embodied by the individual's struggle to keep up appearance in the shared spaces of society.
Mie Mørkeberg (b. 1980) graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 2006.
